Vice City, Leonida, USA.

Grand Theft Auto VI, (confirmed via its first official trailer) is an up-coming open-world game developed by Rockstar Games. It is the only new GTA title to release since 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V. Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

Following the debut of Trailer 1 and in a press-release announcement via Take-Two’s official website, Co-Founder and current President, Sam Houser said Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere”.

Following the successful release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, the President of Rockstar North, Leslie Benzies (who has since departed from the company), expressed the development teams had some ideas for the next entry in the series. These ideas included having one big playable map which gave the players the ability to fly between different locations that have featured in the series over the last 25 years.

In March 2018, ‘The Know’ reported that the game, code-named ‘Project Americas’ would be set in Vice City and partly South America. They also reported that for the first time ever in the series, the game would feature a female lead protagonist.

In April 2020, Jason Schreier reported that the game was in early development and would be a moderately sized release which would expand over time.

In July 2021, Tom Henderson claimed that the game would be set in a modern-Vice City, but the game would not release until at least 2025.

On February 4th, 2022, in a Community Update directly from Rockstar Games, the developer confirmed that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto Series was well ‘well underway‘. They expressed in a statement that “with every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered – and we are please to confirmed that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.

On 18th September 2022, 90 videos which showed almost an hours worth of gameplay of a pre-alpha footage was published on the GTAForums by a user known as ‘teapotuberhacker’. Jason Scherier confirmed with his sources at Rockstar Games on the legitimacy of the footage, whom later confirmed that they were genuine. The footage, which was of various stages of development, showed the modern-day setting of Vice City, as well as a male and female playable character, gameplay tests, animation tests, weapon systems, movement mechanics, building interiors, and a mission which shows the 2 main characters holding up a diner. The leaks also confirmed the names of the protagonists, Jason and Lucia. This confirmed the previous reports in March 2018.

On 8th November 2023, Rockstar Games published a message on behalf of their founder, Sam Houser thanking everyone for their support over the last 25 years, a milestone the company is celebrating in December. Following this, the statement claimed that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto game would be revealed in early December.

Whilst there is no confirmation on whether the next title will be called Grand Theft Auto VI, or quite simply ‘Grand Theft Auto’, it’s clear that the marketing strategy for the game has begun.

On 1st December, 2023 Rockstar Games released a teaser image across their social media platforms which displayed a palm tree artwork with a pink, blue and orange colour pallet. Along with this was the Rockstar Games logo, Trailer 1 and the date of Tuesday, December 5 at 9AM Eastern Time. Rockstar Games did not confirm a game or title, but they did previously confirm the next GTA game would have its first trailer in December 2023.

Grand Theft Auto VI’s trailer was leaked via Twitter/X around 10pm UK Time, just several hours prior to the official premiere. As such, Rockstar Games released the trailer early, showcasing a gorgeous take on modern-day Vice City and an introduction to our two lead character, Jason and Lucia.
